ORDINARY PEOPLE EXTRAORDINARY STORIES
Swinford born Australian playwright Helen Brett will give a talk at Swinford Library on the background to her play, Three Women, True Life Tales of World War II, at 7pm on Wednesday, 25th April. Helen is the daughter of the late Tommy Byrne (dentist) and Maura Byrne.
Helen’s play follows the lives of three people: Erika who grew up in Hitler’s Germany; Jeannette interned by the Japanese in Java (now Indonesia) with her young daughter, and Ronnie, who had things a little easier on her home turf when she joined the Australian Women’s Army.
After the war both the Dutch and the German woman immigrated to Perth where Helen befriended them and the Australian woman, and recorded their stories.
The play employs the original words used by the women to describe their wartime experiences ? a curious mix of pathos and humour that recounts some of the hidden stories that never make it into the history books.
The Three Women production with three Australian actresses will be touring counties Galway and Mayo in early May and will be staged at Castlebar Linen-hall Arts Centre on Wednesday 9 May, Ballina Arts Centre on Thursday 17 May. It finishes up at Charlestown Arts Centre on Friday 19 May.
