CONGRATULATIONS to Thomas Parsons son of Tom and Carmel Parsons Bellaghy, Charlestown, who lined out at centre-field for the Mayo Minors in their comfortable Connacht Semi-final victory over Leitrim in the Connacht Minor Championship played in Carrick -on - Shannon recently as a curtain raiser to the Leitrim versus Mayo Connacht Championship semi-final.
Mayo minors were full value for their win and Parsons turned in a fine display displaying his trade mark high fielding skills which ensured a harvest of possession for a slick Mayo forward line which really lit up the scoreboard with some fine offensive play. Parsons also chipped in with a point and he and his fellow Sarsfields collegue David Caffrey who was a sub on the team and somewhat unlucky not to make the first fifteen can now look forward to pitting their wits against Roscommon in the Connacht final in McHale Park,Castlebar on Sunday July 16th . We wish both lads well in their quest for Connacht Minor honours and hopefully they will become part of select band of Sarsfields players to have appeared on Connacht Minor winning Mayo sides. Watch this space !

LATE TERESA MURRAY
The death took place at St Attracta`s Nursing Home, Charlestown, of Mrs Teresa Murray, The Square, Charlestown. Her remains were removed to St James Church, Charlestown, and burial took place after solemn requiem Mass to the Cemetery of the Resurrection. She is survived by her sons Gerry, Pat and Peter, brother Micky and sister Kathleen, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a wide circle of friends.
She was a lady of great faith and together with her late husband Peter who predeceased her some years ago ran a thriving pub business on The Square before handing over the reins to her son Gerry. She was a great family woman who took a deep interest in their care and well being at all times. Her death robs the community of one of its oldest and finest citizens and evidence of the esteem in which she was held could be gauged from the huge crowds who attended the removal of her remains and subsequent burial. We tender our deep-est sympathies to the bereaved.

SARSFIELDS IN THRILLER
The division 1 Minor league resumed in O`Hara Park, Charlestown after the break for the exams with a real thriller with Charlestown Sarsfields taking on a much vaunted Castlebar Mitchel’s side in a cracking gameplayed in splendid conditions. This was a real thriller between two teams who went at each other from the first whistle and what ensued was a free flowing, end to end spectacle which ebbed and flowed throughout with both sides having their chances to snatch the points. In the end a draw was probably the fairest outcome as both sides can justifiably claim that they deserved something out a contest that had everyone on the edge of their seats right from the off. The Sarsfields lined out minus the services of Sean Morris, Fergal Quinn, Shane Finn and Richard Murphy yet despite being understrength all fifteen players really upped the level of their performance and contested every ballwith passion and commitment which flowed right throughout the team. It was a very heartening performance from the Sarsfields and with two games left against West-port and Claremorris respectively the Sarsfields are very much in the mix to claim a play-off spot and seek a third league title on the spin. It was a superb team performance with each and every player standing tall and if the Sarsfields can repeat this level and show the same consistency in their remaining matches they will prove a tough nut to crack against any opposition.

MINOR FIXTURE
Charlestown Sarsfields take on Westport in round 7 of the Division 1 Minor league on Monday next July 10th in O’Hara Park, Charlestown with the throw-in timed for 8pm.
This is the Sarsfields last fixture and they will be hoping for a win to maintain their push for a play-off spot but Westport will provide stern opposition and it should be a cracker between two teams who are very evenly matched in terms of ability and league standing.
COUNTY BOARD DRAW WINNERS

RACE NIGHT A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
The Charlestown Sars-fields G.A.A. Club held a very successful race night in Healy`s Bar and Café recently. It was a super night and all the money raised goes to the senior team fund in order to meet the huge costs involved in training and preparing the team such as medical, travel, gear etc. The club would like to thank all the sponsors who sponsored races on the night, their help and support is gratefully and deeply appreciated and valued. A special thanks also to John and Therese Healy of Healy`s Bar and Café for their sponsor ship on the night, for their use of the premises and for the food and refreshments which were served on the night which went down a real treat with the racegoers. Thanks also to the people who purchased horses and congratulations to all those whose horses came first. A special word of thanks to the people who ran the tote on the night, they did their usual first class job and everything ran smooth-ly with money changing hands in the ring at a rapid rate.
Well done also to Kevin Deignan who toiled long and hard into the night putting the programme together. He did his customary excellent job and he can take a bow for his part in making the night a real winner for everyone connected with the club.
A word also for the roadie, Fr. Mike Maloney, who was barred from the parade ring but who was the man in the control box, so to speak, and together with his sidekick Deignan, they made sure that the technology end of things ran smoothly and perhaps there might well be a new career for Fr. Mick as stable lad as he has a real knack of making the horses feel at ease and perhaps we might have unearthed another Robert Redford aka Horse Whisperer.
We will watch this talent unfold in the months ahead.
ST ATTRACTA’S NS REUNION MEETING
A meeting of the St Attracta`s 50 reunion committee will be held in St Attracta`s N.S. on Tuesday July 4th @8.30pm. All members are requested to attend.
SARSFIELDS REGAIN WINNING THEME
The Sarsfields Junior team bounced back from their opening first round defeat against Eastern Gaels to overcome Swinford with some ease in round two of the East Mayo Junior Championship.
The Sarsfields fielding a close to full strength selection had too much craft and class for their opponents and ran out comfortable winners having held their opponents scoreless in the opening period.
It was a much more commanding and solid performance from the Sarsfields and they upped their performance considerably from their first round loss to coast home and put themselves back in the frame to compete for a place in the knockout stages.
Their best performers on the night were Colm Maye. Ronan Kenny, Joe McBrien, Martin Mulvaney, Colm Horkan, Shane Moran, Fr. Mike Maloney (overcoming a Peter Crouch like scoring drought to bag his first goal of the season) Gus Marren who was a menace on the edge of the square and Liam Morris.
PUB SPY IN TOWN
The Pub Spy team from The Sunday World Newspaper paid a surprise and unexpected visit to Charlestown recently and they dropped into Garvey`s Dew Drop Inn on the Square and Walsh`s Bar, Main Street, Charlestown and did their usual check and thorough investigation of everything to do with the pub from the décor, design, layout, cleanliness, and attitude of the staff and both pubs emerged with flying colours and got a glowing report in a recent Sunday World publication.
They were very impressed with all aspects of both pubs and well done to the proprietors and they were also extremely complimentry about the standard of the pint which went down a treat in both hostelries.
Well done folks keep up the good work!
