Erris - Dooncarton victims appeal to Govt to release landslide funds
The Dooncarton Landslide Committee is calling on the Government to release funds to help protect the community from future flooding and landslides. The Pullathomas Implementation Working Group has put together a package worth €1.685 million for protection works, drainage and other remedial works on Dooncarton Hill to counter against any future landslides. The proposed works include 593 metres of kinetic fencing across the high risk areas of the hill above Glengad and Pullathomas (cemetery). There will also be drainage works completed and new berms built. "We in the Committee believe that this will go a major way to dealing with the constant threat that now hangs over us in Glengad of landslides and flooding," the Dooncarton Landslide Committee say in a statement. "The works package is now being considered by the government and is on the desks of Ministers Eamon O Cuiv (Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs), Dick Roche (Environment) and Tom Parlon (Office of Public Works). "We call on the three ministers to make the funds of EUR 1.685 million for this package available as soon as possible. We feel there is an urgent need to move forward on this quickly and to get protection works completed as fast as possible. "This will restore further confidence to the people of the area to live in relative peace of mind and security and that from a structural point of view the whole area will be better able in future to deal with flooding and land movements on the hill. "We would like to express our continued thanks to Mayo Co. Council and the government for their support," the statement concludes.
