Galway - Glenamaddy pub changes hands
One of the best known licensed landmarks in North Galway, Phelan’s Lounge and Bar, Garrylaun, Glenamaddy, has changed hands in recent days. The premises were withdrawn from public auction at Tully’s Hotel in Castlerea by auctioneer Martin Tyrell. Private negotiations continued and eventually the property was sold for a major figure. The new owner is Tommy Harte of the well-known Harte family from Roscommon. They have a number of butcher shops throughout the North Galway region, including Glenamaddy. It is understood that Mr. Harte is in the process of investing considerable capital in the reconstruction and refurbishments of the Phelan property and believes there is excellent potential for future successful trading. He has paid a special tribute to the Phelan family for their cooperation in the sale. The Phelan family would like to offer their appreciation and thanks to the people of Glenamaddy and neighbouring areas for their support and goodwill to their late parents over the years. Auctioneer Martin Tyrell confirmed there were five interested parties in the property and that the location and overall lay-out were major factors in completing the sale. Bruen and Glynn Solrs., Tuam and Glenamaddy, were the solicitors involved in the transaction. HURLERS WIN Galway and Kilkenny served up another thriller in the All-Ireland minor hurling final replay in Tullamore recently. After an excellent game, Galway edged home with a dramatic 0-16 to 1-12 victory. The team was managed by Mattie Murphy who spent a recent term in charge of the Mayo senior hurlers. Mattie’s many friends in Mayo are delighted for him and the Galway lads on their fine win. DAVITT LECTURE Michael Mullen from Swinford delivered a superb lecture on the life and times of Michael Davitt when he addressed a gathering in Garrafrauns Community Centre last week. Michael’s wonderful knowledge of Davitt, growing up in Mayo and emigrating to Lancashire, plus his other journeys overseas, created great enthusiasm among the charmed audience. They were especially interested in the story of the families from the nearby village of Quinalatagh who were dispossessed by landlords at the time. This incident played a major role in the formation of the Land League and the inaugural meeting in nearby Irishtown. Well done, Michael. WEDDING BELLS Congratulations to Nollag Fitzgerald, Garrafrauns and Noel Concannon, Carrowpadden, Dunmore who were married recently in Garrafrauns Church. An enjoyable reception was held afterwards in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport. DUNMORE THROUGH Dunmore MacHales are through to the final of the Galway Intermediate championship following their 1-12 to 0-10 win over St. James’ (Mervue-Renmore) in Corofin on Sunday. They will play Caherlistrane in the final. The teams were level at 0-4 apiece at the interval, the Dunmore scores coming from Michael Donnellan (two), Chris Donnellan and David Glynn. Dunmore gained the upperhand on the restart with two points form frees by Michael Donnellan and one from David Glynn. The decisive score came shortly afterwards when defender Denis Fallon chipped over the advancing Tommie White for a great goal for Dunmore. From there to the end, Dunmore looked the likely winners even though it took a wonder save by Dunmore goalie Robert Byrne to deny St. James’s a goal three minutes from time. Richie Daly had an outstanding game for Dunmore at corner back and among other to shine for Dunmore were Michael Donnellan, Paul Gleeson, John Dooley, Robert Byrne, David Cronin, and David Glynn. Dunmore: Robert Byrne; James Henry, Paul Gleeson, Richard Daly; Denis Fallon, John Dooley, Michael Slattery; Gareth Burns, David Cronin; Brian Higgins, Michael Donnellan, Tomas Gilmore; John Slattery, Chrs Donnellan, David Glynn. Subs used: Brendan Bowens and John Boyle. * Caherlistrane defeated Kilconly by 0-7 to 0-4 in the other low scoring semi-final. The winners are managed by Larry Bane. * Killererin will play Salthill/Knocknacarra in this year’s Galway senior football final. They recorded wins over Mountbellew/Moylough and An Cheathru Rua respectively at the weekend. The senior and intermediate finals will be played on the same date in Pearse Stadium. KILCONLY CEILI A Ceili Mor will be held in Kilconly Community Centre on Saturday 25th September. Music will be provided by Carousel. The proceeds from the ceili will go to the Galway County Association for Mentally Handicapped children.
