The sculpture known as “The Player” in Ballindine which has received national attention following petitions from local residents was moved on Thursday last.
Mr Cathal McCarthy from Ballintubber who designed the sculpture said he received both positive and negative reaction from residents when it was first brought into public view in the village. He said he received a petition from some forty residents who felt it hampered their view onto the main road and they wanted it moved.
The brightly painted steel sculpture, which commemorates the life of Martin Donoghue, who set up the Disabled Driver’s Association, has now been given a new home, 100 yards further along the Main Road.
Mr McCarthy said he felt this was a better site for the piece as it gives it a better viewing location and will be developed as an amenity in the village.
“It has now been moved to a green area owned by Mayo County Council which when finished will be ideal. In terms of development it is a great site which will look good when the landscaping is done. There will be seating placed beside the piece and it will have better parking for invididuals and families who wish to come and view the sculpture in closer detail. A plaque will also be placed beside it detailing the reasons behind it,” said Mr McCarthy.
The move followed an extensive consultation with the residents of Ballindine, Mayo County Council Senior Officials and the Artist. It was fabricated at MF Hopkins, Castlebar and was jointly commissioned by Mayo County Council and the Disabled Drivers Association.
