For the second time in the space of a year a young local singing star has outshone the rest and performed with great distinction.

Kerri Haberlin from 24, Richardsons Meadows, Kilcohan has once more triumphed in a Stars In Your Eyes talent competition. The talented young twelve year old was the overall winner in the latest talent search which took place in Flash’s Bar, High Street recently where she was the outright winner in the 8 to 12 year old section. Having sailed through the first heats on the 19th September Kerri took her place in the final on Sunday 3rd October along with 30 other hopefuls, where yet again she impressed the judges with a fantastic rendition of the Jamelia hit “Superstar”. Kerri now gets the chance to record her winning song on to CD in a professional recording studio. Last January, she had her first taste of success in “Stars” when winning the local competition, which took place in the Butler Community Centre. All her family are really thrilled and proud with Kerri’s success, and for this talented youngster, who is a 1st year student at St. Angela’s Secondary, who knows what may lie ahead in the world of entertainment.

URSULINE FEIS

Irish Dancing, always so prominent in St. Ursula’s school started off very successfully again this year with the 30th annual Ursuline Feis which was held on Sunday October 3rd. As usual, a very high standard of dancing was on display and congratulations must go to the following who won medals, plaques and /or trophies: Leanne Cassidy, Jessica Erkal, Mella Conte, Chloe Meaghar, Vicky Sheridan, Katie Tyrell, Maria Malone, Shauna Doherty, Ruth Cahill, Alison Brennan, Amy O’ Loughlin, Nadia Defang, Jane Sheridan, Kellie Dalton, Tara Walsh, Ciara O’ Rourke, Lucy Power, Jessica O’ Brien, Katie Ryan, Jessica Flynn, Niamh Maher, Michaela Nolan, Catherine O’ Brien, Nicole O’ Rourke and Niamh Ryan. Ciara Suffin was also another pupil of the school who participated with great distinction, this time in a Feis which took place in Dooley’s Hotel on Sunday September 26th where she won an array of medals and plaques.

CROSS COUNTRY

A big sporting event for pupils of St. Ursula’s was the recent County Cross Country Championships which took place in Dungarvan on Sunday October 3rd. Here Elanna Forristal, Tara Power, Laura Connolly and Aisling Quinn competed and performed outstandingly well. Elanna won the Under 13 1000m while her team also come first in that event. Tara was on the team who came 3rd. Aisling won the U9 600m, her team coming 1st while Laura’s team came 1st in the Under 9 800m. Well done girls!

HOME TO CELEBRATE

Coming home this week for a short break from the Yorkshire in England is Catherine Mc Partlan. Catherine, who is originally from St. John’s Park will arrive on Friday 15th along with her family for what should be an enjoyable and memorable time. This trip home should be all the more special as she will be celebrating the milestone of her 50th Birthday while here. Brothers Tony, Michael and Bobby Sinnott are eagerly looking forward to the re union with sis ,when there is sure to be a real birthday bash. Catherine has been living cross channel for more than twenty years and is owner of the Dock Green pub in Leeds.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

Are you aged 18 or over, have 1-2 hours per week to spare and maybe interested in working with young people. Well, the S.W.A.Y project which is based in the Youth Resource centre in St. John’s Park is currently looking for volunteers. S.W.A.Y is an exciting and fun project which provides youngsters with a number of different opportunities within a variety of programmes ranging from personal and social development discussions, outdoor pursuits, creative arts, team challenges, educational visits and outings. Currently the project has a team of long-term volunteers, which carry out these programmes. However, there is still a need of more volunteers who may have a few hours of spare time during the week. GET WELL WISHES

Very best wishes from neighbours and friends to Biddy Barrett, The Square, St. John’s Park who is presently a patient in St. Patrick’s hospital. Biddy is recuperating following a recent accident and everyone is hoping that it won’t be too long before Biddy is back home again. Also wishing a speedy recovery to Mrs. Keane, Ballytruckle who likewise is a patient in St. Patrick’s Hospital. All in Ballytruckle send their very best wishes.

FANTASTIC AUTUMN BREAK

The Sacred Heart Active Retirement Group last week had a most enjoyable four day break in Killarney. Local members were joined by a group from Carrick – On – Suir and altogether 33 senior citizens made the trip to the Kingdom. Staying at the luxurious Holiday Inn, everyone had a fantastic time and are already looking forward to the next outing. During their time there they took in the spectacular Ring of Kerry and the Gap of Dunloe with also time made for shopping in Tralee and Killarney. On their last night, Thursday 7th, they rounded off a great few days in style with a Country & Western a night at the famous Glen Eagle Hotel. This year’s Dinner Dance will once again take place in the Rhu Glen on Wednesday 8th of December.

WEEKEND OF CELEBRATION

This coming weekend 15th, 16th and 17th October, Brennans the Candy will hold a special three days of celebration to commemorate the pub’s 40th Anniversary. Things get rolling on Friday night with a Karaoke Competition and Heineken promotion. Saturday 16th will see the return of the one and only and very popular Elvis impersonator Rocky Mills. Rocky will be followed by a resident DJ who will then churn out some of the great hits of the 60’s.

On Sunday night New Orleans will provide the entertainment and are sure to get the crowd on their feet for the final Hoedown. There will be raffles for some great spot prizes on every night with also a few hidden surprises thrown in. All proceeds raised over the special weekend will go to the Friends of St. Patrick’s Hospital. Locals have been very supportive of St. Patrick’s in the past and it’s hoped once again they will turn out in numbers to lend their patronage and to join in the fun and craic of what promises to be a great three days.

KILCOHAN ICA

The Guild held it’s October meeting in the Ursuline Convent on Thursday 7th October. At the moment members are really enjoying their Decoupage classes on Thursday evenings and will continue with these for the next few weeks. The monthly competition prize was won by Aileen O’ Leary and the winner of the raffle on the night was Joan O’ Reilly. Phyliss Curtin and Celine Brennan recently attended a Federation meeting in Tramore and brought back a report from there. The annual Mass for deceased members will be held in the Ursuline Convent on Thursday 11th November at 7.30pm.

The tea group for next month will be Mary, Moira and Nancy, so it will be fancy plate time!. The next committee meeting will be on the 28th October while the regular monthly meeting will take place on Thursday 4th November at 7.30pm.
