THE extremely talented West Waterford-born traditional group Danú recently returned from another extensive overseas tour, and there’s a chance to hear them locally this Friday, May 24, when they play a concert at Waterford’s Theatre Royal starring at 8:00 pm. This excellent band of musicians continue to gather an ever increasing fan base through their striking creativity and spirit along with high energy playing and skill.
Donncadh Gough, Benny McCarthy and the lads in Danú recently released a very impressive new album titled “All Things Considered” which it has to be said copper fastens their wonderful reputation in music circles around this country and beyond.
The C.D. blends an equal amount of exciting reels, jigs and hornpipes, along with a selection of old and new songs performed by the commanding voice of Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, recently voted “Top Vocalist” in the TG4 traditional music awards.
At the Theatre Royal this Friday Danú will be joined by a group called “Barachois” from Canada. This four member outfit have been described as Acadian Music and dance sensations. It’s a concert not to be missed.
THE PADDIES
Lately I received a copy of a promotional single by a talented band called “The Paddies” whose line-up includes a number of names from the music scene around these parts.
The song is called “Lily” and extremely catchy it is too, with a sound best described as with a strong Waterboys type feel laced with a distinctive traditional touch.
The Paddies certainly boast a very experienced line-up consisting of Brendan Ryder, Bobby Bible, Dave Hallissey, John McCarthy and Raymond Bergin.
STOCKTONS WING
Following last Friday’s energy driven performance by hot Irish rock act at “The Revs” at South in Tramore, the venue will this Friday night play host to very creditable folk group “Stocktons Wing who have been to the fore of the music scene since the early 80s.
Responsible for really fine numbers such as “Beautiful Affair” and “Walk Away,” Mike Hanrahan and the lads in Stocktons Wing are master craftsmen at what they do. Their show at South this Friday should be well worth going along to. Doors open at 10.00 p.m. and admission is e10.
PADDY O’BRIEN DATE
Enjoying success at present with his latest single release “All Those Years Ago” popular singer Paddy O’Brien can be heard this Friday night, May 24, at Crotty’s Music Lounge, Lemybrien.
Paddy and the band were originally pencilled in to play at the venue on the following night, but this has now been brought forward to Friday.
GEKKO
The 80s music club “Gekko” which happens one night a month at The Forum is expanding and from now on will be based downstairs in the much larger Regal Room.
To mark this move, Gekko will stage a major party on Friday, May 31, which is going to feature video screens, dancers, and a sound and lighting system which is sure to impress. The DJ on the night is a very reasonable e8, and indeed concessions are available by e-mailing your name and mobile telephone number to gekkoclub@ dol.ie. Doors open at midnight.
