Plan warns against new dwellings on Blaskets
DETAILS of the new draft local area plan for the Great Blasket Island have been presented to members of Kerry County Council for consideration.
The document states that being included on UNESCO’S list of World Heritage Sites should be the ultimate aim of the Blasket Island Forum.
It has been stressed that the construction of small non-residential buildings or a small shop may be necessary to facilitate visitors to the island. No new dwellings would be allowed, while any new nonresidential buildings would have to comply with very strict guidelines.
On the question of former residents who may wish to return to live on the island, there is provision for a number of existing buildings to be renovated for this purpose. The report also stresses that any extensions to buildings will have to be in accordance with strict planning guidelines.
The draft plan comes down strongly against proposals to allow a camping site on the Island and noted that the application for a camping facility had been withdrawn.
The plan also states that roadways must not be altered or surfaced, apart from maintenance and repairs. Outdoor fixed electrical lighting will also be banned.
In relation to world heritage site status, the draft report states that the island is of unique cultural importance. It states that the Irish language should play an essential part in all aspects of conservation of the island and that conservation work on the island’s buildings and other structures is urgently required.
The Blasket Forum, which consists of representatives of all stockholders and Blasket interest groups, have worked in close partnership with the county council in the preparation of the plan.
The forum has also selected a site on the island shore on which a pier will be constructed. The draft plan is now under public consultation and will then return for adoption by the council members.
Two other plans relating to visitor management and the preservation of archaeological remains are also due to be published in the near future.
