WELL done to Convent Primary School girls whose Christmas carol singing in the town raised the fantastic amount of €1,668.69.

School principal, Joan Mulvihill, told The Kingdom the entire student body of 260 from junior infants to sixth class took to the streets to perform from all-time favourite carols.

"We are overwhelmed by the response and we thank everyone who give so generously to the girls collecting on the day," she said..

"This fantastic amount of €1668.69 will be distributed among local charities in the town," said a delighted Ms Mulvihill.

The school was divided into three sections with the juniors singing in the small square and fourth class students performed outside McKenna s Shop.

The fifth and sixth class students spread themselves all over the town to the enjoyment of everyone who heard them.

"We had a tremendous day and the girls and stuff really enjoyed singing the carols,", Ms Mulvihill told The Kingdom.

"The girls had practised so hard and their effort has been rewarded so generously by everyone".

She explained that the carol singing in the town is not only to raise money for worthy charities but also to teach children that Christmas is a time for thinking of others too.

"This was a good experience for them as it shows them the value of giving," she said.

"They get to help charities around the town and become aware that it s not just take, take at Christmas time you have to look after others as well".

The school will decide later this week where the money collected will go but all the charities are so worthy it is hard work deciding.
