INTENSE speculation on the future of Dick Spring came to an end on Monday when it was confirmed that the former North Kerry TD is to take on a major executive function with Killorglin- based financial services company, Fexco.

Spring, who narrowly missed out on retaining his North Kerry seat in the May general election, has served as a non-executive director in the company for over five years.

But, the former Tainiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, who bowed out of politics following his election defeat, will join the company on a full-time capacity this week.

He will take over as the Executive Vice President of the Fexco Group and he will be based at the company’s Killorglin headquarters.

"We are extremely pleased that Dick selected to work with us and we look forward to working with him in the years to come," Fexco spokesman, Denis Crowley, told The Kingdom.

"It’s a full-time role and while based in Killorglin, his role is an international one," he said. "No doubt he will be undertaking a lot of travel on behalf of the company," Mr Crowley added.

Much of the former Labour leader’s role in the company will be in exploring the potential for growth and development in light of the growing relationship between the Killorglin company and their minor investors, First Data, who own the Western Union brand.

According to Denis Crowley, the First Data group, though mainly based in the US, has global aspirations which, over the coming years, will allow Fexco to market its products on a much wider market.

"Dick’s brief is to maximise the benefits of that relationship though he will contribute in a lot of other areas," Mr Crowley told The Kingdom.

"Dick was a non executive director for five years and performed brilliantly, giving his time selflessly to the company," he added.

"We got to know him very well over the years and it will be a very easy transition for him to assume an executive role," Mr Crowley maintained.
