Special night of trad at The Dock
THE DOCK in Carrick-onShannon will present a special night of traditional music on Wednesday, June 28th, featuring world renowned musicians, Jarlath McTernan, Rick Epping, Michael Holmes and Shane McAleer.
Having recently performed to sell out audiences as a quartet, these four musicians are excited about the energy and sound created from the eclectic blend of instruments in their live show. “Although we are a quartet there are several different combinations of instruments on stage; in fact, there are seven instruments played at our gig,” said Jarlath McTernan.
Shane Mc Aleer, 1989 All Ireland Fiddle Champion and former member of Sligo trad group Dervish, hails from Omagh, County Tyrone. After a few years touring and recording with Dervish he took a break from the road to pursue other projects. He then joined legendary Celtic rock band Stocktons Wing and soon found himself touring the world again with this award winning group. His fiddle playing has been described by many critics as “genius”; this is apparent on both his recordings and in his live performances.
Jarlath McTernan comes from a family steeped in the Irish traditional gene. Starting out on the tin whistle and learning from his father Kevin, native of Drumkeeran, County Leitrim, he soon graduated on to the uilleann pipes. McTernan is no stranger to the touring scene, having been chosen as uilleann piper for Michael Flatley’s Lord of The Dance.
Rick Epping was born in Santa Monica, California in 1949 and has been playing the harmonica since early childhood. Passing unscathed through violin and piano lessons from the age of seven, Rick turned to folk music at 11 years, developing a keen interest in Old Time, Blues and Irish music in his early teens. In 2005, Rick Epping relocated from Ashland, Virginia and is now living in County Sligo, where he is establishing a workshop for harmonica and accordion, playing regularly and enjoying the soft weather.
Last but not least, Michael Holmes is a founder member of Sligo’s own Dervish. The band have been at the forefront of traditional music since its inception in 1989 and continue to tour worldwide at all the major music events. Michael still plays and writes music outside of Dervish and has in recent years moved on to playing tenor guitar and banjo. So don’t miss this chance to hear the best of traditional music played with an amazing line up of multiinstrumentalists at The Dock!
