Green leaders say ‘Yes’

THE Green Party’s ministers, TDs and senators have agreed to vote “Yes” for the EU reform treaty.

It remains to be seen if they can persuade their members to do likewise.

The party will hold a special members’ convention on the issue in Dublin this Saturday.

For the party to officially endorse the treaty during the referendum campaign later this year the leadership needs two-thirds of members to back a “Yes” vote.

That may prove difficult, given that the Greens have advocated a “No” vote in every EU referendum since 1987. However, given that the Taoiseach signed the treaty on behalf of the Government last month, the Green ministers believe they are obliged by collective cabinet responsibility to support a “Yes” vote. Yesterday, the party’s three other TDs and two senators supported a “Yes” vote.

Party leader John Gormley criticised elements of the “No” campaign for lecturing the Greens on how they should act.
