1500 Navigator Pedro Alvarez Cabral discovered Brazil and claimed it on behalf
of Portugal.
1662 King Charles II granted a charter to the Royal Society of London, which
became an important centre of scientific activity in England.
1724 Immanuel Kant, German philosopher, born.
1834 The South Atlantic island of St Helena was declared a British Crown Colony.
1838 The packet steamer Sirius became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic
to New York from Ireland. The journey took 18 days and 10 hours. Though a British ship,
her crew was almost entirely Irish and she was commanded by Richard Roberts, a Royal Navy
lieutenant from Passage West, Co Cork. The Sirus beat the Great Western by almost eight
hours on the trip.
1870 Vladimir llyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Russian revolutionary leader, was born in
Simbirsk.
1904 Robert Oppenheimer, US physicist who invented the atomic bomb, born.
1905 Captain William OShea, politician and first husband of Katharine
OShea, died.
1915 Germany first used poison gas at Ypres.
1933 Death of Frederick Henry Royce, co-founder of Rolls Royce car company.
1967 Walter Macken, author and dramatist, died. Among his works were Quench the
Moon (1948), Rain on the Wind (1950) and Seek the Fair Land (1959).
1969 Sailor Robin Knox Johnston made it home after a 312-day solo voyage around
the world.
1972 The first people to row across the Pacific Ocean, Sylvia Cook and John
Fairfax, arrived in Australia; they had been at sea for 362 days.
1989 Archaeologists said they had unearthed a 2,000-year-old mummy in
a gold covered coffin in the Egyptian oasis, Fayoum. She was wrapped in linen and dried
flowers and had a child beside her.
