KILKENNY hurling star Henry Shefflin was the special guest at the Muinebheag Juvenile GAA presentation night.

The famous Cat turned up to present over 100 young GAA athletes from the Bagenalstown area with their award winning medals.

A huge crowd of over 300 people were present on the night to support the club in appreciation of its hard work and effort. The club which does so much good work with the community and the school had plenty to celebrate this year.

Last week’s ceremony in Baganalstown de la Salle went off a treat. Children and parents turned out for the celebrations, awards and to catch a glimpse of their hurling hero.

Jospeph’s book on former pope praised
BY LYNDA CONNOLLY

THE son of a Bunclody woman is the author of a new book on the life of the former revered Pope, John

XXIII.

The book has already been met with enthusiasm, interest and rapid sales.

Joseph McEvoy, author of the book, is a past pupil of Knockbeg College and son of Mary K. McEvoy nee Roberts, a native of Bunclody.

This is Joseph’s second book and it is already proving to be a huge success.

It focuses on the life of Pope John XXIII. The account of his qualities, Bishop James Moriarty, said, “helps to capture the humanity of the pope for the present generation”. He said that it was this quality that endeared him to multitudes, Catholic and non-Catholic alike.

Joseph is a retired local government official and is a frequent contributor to Reality, Studies and Young Catholic magazines. He also writes for the Irish Catholic newspaper.

He has dedicated the book to a close friend, the late Rev. Thomas Counihan, S.J, who was well known for his weekend retreats to Rathfarnham Castle in Dublin.

The book titled “A Reign Too Brief” is published by Messenger Publications, 37 Lower Lesson Street, Dublin. Copies can be obtained at 5 each including postage.

Bishop Moriarty said: “Perhaps no one in history was mourned so deeply as Pope John as he lay dying in the warm Roman days of late May and early June 1963 - truly a reign too brief.”

Concerts success
BY LYNDA CONNOLLY

THE Graignamanagh/St. Mullins Duiske Concert 2003 is proving to be a huge success this year.

It started with a performance by Anúna who gave a new lease of life to the music of the ancient Celts. Their haunting sound went down well at the Abbey centre along with their use of cloaked and candle lit processions. The whole room was filled with a mystical and eerie feeling.

The opening act for the concert developed a spiritual sound that almost broke down barriers between the real and unreal. It gave a new sense of emotion to Ireland’s rich and turbulent past. The group has enchanted audiences in America, Finland, Holland and now Graignamanagh.

This act was followed by the talented Mr. Neil Cooney. He is hailed as a very rare and special poetic talent and is fast becoming one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation. His career highlights include a concerto appearance at the RTE proms and his debut CD of works by Schumann and Schubert. He wooed the audience at the abbey with his musical ability and enticed everyone into his every mood.

Tonight (Wednesday) the abbey will be visited by Danú. They are an Irish traditional group that is made up of seven young musicians. The group has a strong ethos of loyalty to the tradition, from which their music comes and yet still bring a fresh, inspiring approach to their performances.

Danú have been described as a lively group on stage, a concert that is unique experience and not easily forgotten.

Crumlin says thanks for local walk effort
BY LYNDA CONNOLLY

CHARITY walkers from Myshall were thanked by Crumlin’s Children Hospital for raising an amazing total of 16,176.

Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children sent out a letter of thanks this week for their much appreciated support. The message was simple: “Please be assured you have made a differ-ence.”

150 men and women came together for the Nine Stones Fundraising Walk. The event was organised by Ann Fenlon McGagh from Myshall and together the group walked for 8km.

The money raised will go towards upgrading facilities and equipment. The hospital is also responsible for funding the total budget of The Children’s Research Centre, which is currently at 1.5m. So the donation by the Carlow walkers will be a huge help.

The letter thanked everyone who contributed through sponsorship, participation or donation of monies or prizes to help raise the fantastic total.

The hospital is the national referral centre for seriously ill children in Ireland and is one of the largest paediatric centres in Europe.

Children are treated for illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, cancer and leukaemia at the hospital.

When the children’s research centre opened in 1965, the cure rate for seriously ill children in Ireland was 1%. Today the figure is 85% and up.

The centre however is dependent on voluntary funding to operate. It’s support like the spirit produced by the Co. Carlow charity walkers that makes the whole development possible. It is a fantastic achievement.
