In a game played in brilliant sunshine Ballon opened the scoring with a goal after five minutes before Caoimhe Whelan opened Tinryland-Benne-kerry’s account with a point four minutes later.

In the 11th minute Caoimhe was on hand to crack home the opening goal for the defending champions and from then onwards the girls never looked back. At half time the score was 3-4 to 1-1 in favour of Tinryland-Benne-kerry with Antoinette Farrell and Louise McArdle notching further goals.

The second half was all one-way traffic with Tinryland-Bennekerry scoring further goals from Sinead Lyons who had an excellent game and Laura O’Farrell. Despite a brief Ballon rally Tinryland-Bennekerry ran out easy winners at the end on a final score of 5-11 to 2-2. The captain Karen Mullins was presented with the trophy by her father Fran who is the Co. chairman at the end of the game.

Best were Aimee Doyle, Laura Murphy, Karen Doyle, Sinead Lyons, Caoimhe Whelan, Louise McArdle, and Antoinette Farrell.

MINORS GET LAST GASP DRAW: Tinryland minor footballers needed an injury time goal from the penalty spot to gain a share of the spoils with Rathvilly in the M.F.L. at Rathvilly on Thursday last.

With both teams already qualified for the semi-final of the league this game was played at a furious pace with one eye on the forthcoming MFC.

On a very warm evening both teams served up a high standard of football with the scores level at the interval. Tinryland’s only goal of the first half was scored by Andrew Murphy in the 26th minute. At one stage in the second half Tinryland held a three point advantage but it was Rathvilly who looked the stronger entering the closing stages. The home side led by a comfortable four points three minutes into stoppage time before sub. Alan Barrett reduced the margin to one goal with a 40 metre free.

With one last gasp effort after six minutes of injury time Shane O’Neill was grounded in the small square and Paul Broderick converted the resulting penalty to give Tinryland a draw that looked highly unlikely minutes earlier.

On this showing Tinryland will have to improve a bit if they are to win the forthcoming championship but before that competition takes place these two teams will meet again in the league semi-final.

Best for Tinryland were goalkeeper David O’Neill who saved a first half penalty, he was well supported by Peter Doran, Padraig Minnock, Colm Doran, Mark Dempsey, and Paul Broderick.

On this Saturday evening at 6 pm in Dr. Cullen Park Tinryland will play Ballinabranna in the semi-final of the Rapid Express IFC. The winners will play either Askea or St. Andrews who contest the other semi-final next week.

The McDonald’s Co. U-14 championship finals could see two Tinryland teams in action at Dr. Cullen Park on Monday next. The No. 2 team have already qualified for the division 2B final where they face Clonegal. Depending on the result of the Div. 1 A semi-final with Mount Leinster Rangers on Monday last a second team from the club could be in action at Dr. Cullen Park on Monday.

Tinryland face Grange in the JFC “B” in Palatine GAA Grounds in Benne-kerry tonight (Wednesday) at 7.30 pm.

LOCAL HORSE WINS: Having been placed at the recent Killarney and Galway festivals locally owned Murghob visited the winners enclosure at Downpatrick races on Saturday last when the four year-old gelding won the Downpatrick Museum Maiden Hurdle over 2 miles and 6 furlongs.

Murghob is owned by Shay and Rita Byrne of Linkardstown and is trained at Bagenalstown by in-form trainer Pat Hughes. The horse was given a fine ride by top jockey Timmy Murphy to come home with four lengths to spare over English challenger Old Nosey. Local punters who backed the horse at best odds of 7/2 got a nice return for their investment and judging by the manner victory on Saturday further 7.30 pm. glory awaits Murghob when conditions are in his favour.

LATE THOMAS BUTLER: The death of Thomas Butler, Castletown, as the result of a tragic drowning accident at Lanigan’s Lock on Monday last caused much sadness in the area.

Thomas, who was only 42, had been fishing at the lock when he decided to go for a swim. Unfortunately, though he was a good swimmer, he experienced difficulties, and despite the best efforts of his partner Maria, he could not be saved.

His family experienced the additional trauma of having to wait until Friday before family members and friends recovered his body.

Thomas was of a quiet dis-position and worked in the building trade and also did some landscape gardening. His interests included fishing, music and bowling (as practiced in West Cork).

He will be sadly missed by his heartbroken parents Tom and Lily (Castletown), partner Maria, brothers John (Castletown), Michael (Athy), sisters Catherine (Castledermot) Siobhán (Rathcrogue), Elizabeth (Castle-town), relatives and friends.

Remains were removed from Kearney’s funeral home, Fenagh to Bagenalstown Church on Sunday evening. Burial took place in New-town cemetery on Monday after concelebrated Mass by Rev. Pierce Murphy P.P Bagenalstown, assisted by Rev. John McEvoy P.P Tinryland.

After the burial as a final farewell his friends sang Rita McNeill’s Tis a working man I am which was his favourite ballad. NATIONAL BRONZE: Congratulations are extended to Tinryland AC Athlete Pat Byrne who won a bronze medal in the 3000m Steeplechase at the National Track and Field Championships in Santry last weekend.

AUTUMN LEAGUE: Tinryland AC have announced the following dates for the annual autumn league in September with all stages starting and finishing in Tinryland.

Stage 1 over 2 miles is on Wednesday, September 3rd at

Stage 2 over 4 miles is on Wednesday September 10th at 7.30 pm.

Stage 3 incorporates the annual Rockford Rooftile 4 Mile Race and is on Sunday September 21st at 2 pm.

The race is sponsored by Dan Morrissey Ireland Ltd with a prize fund of 5,000 with prizes in all the usual categories including course record bonuses.

There will be refreshments and special t-shirts for all finishers. The race incorporates the Leinster novice and masters road championships.

Stage four over two miles will be held on Friday, September 26 at 7 pm.

There will be prizes in all categories and for all who complete the 4 stages
