GAELSCOIL and Garryhill NS a re tops in boy’s indoor hurling competitions and Ballinkillen in the girl’s title for second year in a r ow in the Carlow Cumann na mBunscol Indoor Hurling finals-held on Friday at the CBS hall and Knockbeg College.

There were competitions for the boys and girls. The draw for semi final places resulted in the following pairings: Boys ‘A’ semi final-Ballinkillen v Gaelscoil; Glynn v Bagenalstown; ‘B’ semi final- Ballinabranna v Garryhill; Myshall v Tullow.

Gaelscoil disposed of Ballinkillen easily despite a superb effort from all the Ballinkillen players resulting in a 8-2 victory for Gaelscoil.

The second ‘A’ semi final was a terrific game between southern county players Glynn and St. Brigid’s NS Bagenalstown. There was no score in the first half and Glynn opened the scoring early in the second half. There was an immediate reply from Bagenalstown who scored again within seconds ending the game 2-1 in favour of St. Brigid’s. Both goalies were superb in this game.

Bagenalstown then met Gaelscoil in the final. Gaelscoil were slightly nervous in the opening minutes having never beaten Bagenalstown before but after this initial period Gaelscoil settled down to win the match very impressively 8-3. Best for Bagenalstown were Keith McDonald, Darren Hickey and Alan Corcoran while Gaelscoil’s Tomas O’Brien was one of their outstanding players. Eoin de Rut got three of Gaelscoil’s eight goals in the final with Pol Mac Uileagoid getting four more and Daibhid O’Se their eighth.

The ‘B’ semi final between Garryhill and Ballinbranna showed Garryhill to be a very well balanced team. They went on to win 4-3 and if it was not for Ballinabranna’s goalie they could have won by more.

The second semi final saw Myshall open the scoring in the first half but there was a quick r eply from Tullow before the half time whistle. The second half saw Myshall tiring more, and Tullow went on to win the match 4-3.

The ‘B’ final between Garryhill and Tullow saw the might of an all boys town school up against a small two teacher rural school. The odds would have been against Garryhill, but superb performances from Michael Mullins, James O’Hara, and John Shanahan saw Garryhill win their first ever Indoor Hurling title on a score of 4-1. Tullow’s John Medcalfe and Brian Condon were p rominent at all times and Anthony Moran in goal couldn’t be faulted for effort.

The girls competition was played on a round robin system. Clonegal played Ballinakillen with the latter winning impressively 7-1. Borris, in their first ever Indoor Hurling competition, then played Clonegal, winning on a comfortable scoreline.

The final between Ballinkillen and Borris was thrilling. Borris were up one goal at half time but the first minutes of the second half saw Ballinkillen equalising. At full time the score was level with three goals each. Sadly for them the golden goal rule applied and Ballinkillen fortunately scored first and retained their title, their third in four years. Jennifer Skelton in goal played very well for Borris as did Rita Doyle, though it was a very good all r ound performance from a team in their first ever Indoor Hurling competition. Ballinkillen were well served by Teresa Meaney, Mary Dalton and Niamh Quirke.

Clonegal: Claire Doyle, Margaret Bermingham, Edel Lambert, Jamie Brownrigg, Linda Cumiskey, Julie Sinnott, Sinead Doyle, Mairead Kennedy.
