Montgomery raises funds for telecoms venture Sunday, May 06, 2007 - By Emma Kennedy Tom Montgomery, one of the best-known technology entrepreneurs in the North, has attracted multimillion euro backing for his latest venture, a telecoms software company based in Dundalk. Montgomery, who previously founded technology companies Lagan Technologies and Amacis in Belfast, set up Mobiun in September last year. He described the new venture, which is developing mobile phone applications, as his fastest growing company to date. ‘‘We’re mainly selling to telephone companies throughout Europe,” said Montgomery. ‘‘Essentially, we produce software that their customers can download for additional services on their mobile phone.” The software works on most mobile phones and in several languages. For example, the software can be used by phone customers to tag calls as either personal or business-related. Montgomery said this service made life easier for mobile users who had to itemise their telephone expenses for taxation purposes. Montgomery would not comment on the exact amount of money invested in Mobiun to date, but said the investment had been significant and ‘‘in the millions’’. The company has received funding from institutional and private investors. While the company has a small number of staff at present, it is expected to expand rapidly. All of Montgomery’s previous ventures were based in the North, but he said he decided to base Mobiun in Dundalk to avail of the pool of skilled workers in the area. Montgomery said operating in Dundalk was marginally cheaper than in Dublin or Belfast, but the decision was not primarily motivated by cost factors. The firm has links to the Dundalk Institute of Technology. While Mobiun is focusing on the European market, Montgomery has his sights set on the US in the longer term. The company has a strong export focus and has filed a number of patents for its technology in Britain and the US. ‘‘It’s the nature of the game, but we have to walk before we can run,’’ Montgomery said. Mobiun is the latest in a series of companies that Montgomery has kick-started. He was involved in setting upKainos Software in the 1980s and then founded Lagan Technologies in 1994. Lagan provides customer relationship management (CRM) software to the public sector and employs about 220 people worldwide. Montgomery also founded Amacis, which developed software to manage e-mail CRM solutions in corporations and call centres. The firm raised funds from investors including Enterprise Equity, AIB and Invest Northern Ireland, and was bought by a US firm, Primus Knowledge Systems, in 2004. Montgomery said his experience in the sector provided a solid basis from which to grow Mobiun. |
